Military forces, including nearly 3,000 French, will however remain committed to the Sahelian countries and the Gulf of Guinea. Here is the replay of Emmanuel Macron’s speech.

• This is the maximum penalty incurred. Advocate General Jacques Dallest requested this morning life imprisonment, with a security period of 22 years, against Nordahl Lelandais. Defense arguments take place this afternoon.

12:27 : A glance at the clock, it’s already noon. Here is the essential of the news in four points:

• France and its Western partners have formalized their military withdrawal from Mali, after nine years of anti-jihadist struggle led by Paris. Military forces, including nearly 3,000 French, will however remain committed to the Sahelian countries and the Gulf of Guinea.

• On the eve of the verdict, life imprisonment with a safety period of 22 years was requested against Nordahl Lelandais, accused in particular of the kidnapping and murder of Maëlys de Araujo in 2017. The defense pleadings will have place this afternoon.

• Has Russia withdrawn troops to the border? “We now know that this is false”said a senior White House official, accusing Moscow of having increased his presence military “the last days”including yesterday.

• The Bolloré group celebrates its 200th anniversary. Before retiring, its CEO, Vincent Bolloré, is considering one last big move: the acquisition of the Hachette Livre group. Our journalist Laurence Houot tells you why this project is causing panic in the publishing world.

11:57 : @RainMan: In France, penalties are not cumulative. In the case of the murder of Corporal Arthur Noyer, Nordahl Lelandais was sentenced to twenty years’ imprisonment, with a security period of two thirds. If he is sentenced to a heavier sentence in the Maëlys case, it will not be added to the previous one. He will serve his two sentences but they will not go beyond the longer one.

11:56 : If Lelandais is sentenced to this sentence, is it cumulative with the other sentence resulting from the Noyer trial?

11:55 a.m. : @Anne @Th: Hello. The Advocate General has just requested 22 years of security period, the maximum possible in the case of Nordahl Lelandais, because he is not prosecuted for rape, torture or acts of barbarism on the girl. If the Assize Court follows these requisitions, the accused will not be able to benefit from sentence adjustments (semi-freedom, bracelet, etc.) during this period. However, he may at any time request the end or reduction of the duration of the security sentence, provided that he demonstrates serious guarantees of social rehabilitation. The decision is subject to an expert’s report, carried out by three medical experts who decide on the person’s state of danger.

11:55 a.m. : Life, safety 22 years ??? if it’s 22 years it’s more life, I don’t understand.

11:55 a.m. : Hello to all the team and thank you for your work. Here is my question: can an inmate who takes life imprisonment (LELANDAIS) benefit from sentence reductions like the other inmates and be able to see the sun again one day?? thank you to enlighten me

11:54 : In the comments, many of you wonder about the requisitions pronounced at the trial of Nordahl Lelandais. To answer you, I asked my colleague Catherine Fournier, who followed part of the hearings.

11:27 : After the suspension of hearing, the lawyer of the mother of Maëlys de Araujo defends the “just punishment” required by the public prosecutor’s office, “the maximum” incurred. “The obvious is that you have to be firm”says Fabien Rajon, on behalf of his client, who “was waiting” such severity.
