What can be done to avoid new health scandals in food? On March 30, Public Health France confirmed what had been suspected for two weeks: the dozens of cases of serious infections with the bacterium Escherichia coli are linked to the consumption of Buitoni frozen pizzas which have been contaminated. Two children died.
Chance of the calendar: a second case of contamination took place simultaneously. Several dozen people, mostly children, have contracted salmonellosis after eating Kinder chocolates. On April 8, the Belgian food safety agency closed the Ferrero factory in Arlon (province of Luxembourg) from which Kinder products originated.
Behind all these contaminations, we often find the same culprits. E.coli, salmonella, listeria. The bacteria causing these serious poisonings are well known; however, these food health scandals come up regularly in the news. How to explain it? What control measures exist to avoid them? What really happened in the Nestlé production plant in Caudry (Nord) which made Buitoni pizzas?
