In several cities in France including Toulouse, thousands of lawyers protested this Tuesday, November 16 at 1 p.m. They are protesting against a bill that restricts professional secrecy for certain types of activities and offences.
In Toulouse, several hundred lawyers gathered at Place du Salin to protest against this article 3 of the law “for confidence in the judicial institution” carried by the Keeper of the Seals, Éric Dupond-Moretti. Within this text adopted at the end of October in a joint joint committee, the parliamentarians added exceptions making it possible to set aside the protection of lawyers’ professional secrecy for certain types of activities and offences, such as advice on tax matters, financial resources such as corruption, influence peddling, money laundering.
“We defend the professional secrecy of lawyers, not for us but for our clients, it is one of the foundations of our state of law. We legalize exceptions to professional secrecy in the context of specific offenses but tomorrow it may be in terms of bank fraud and then finally in terms of all other offences. We must not give in, it is an unbearable attack on democracy”, reacted Pierre Dunac, president of the Toulouse bar, on the sidelines of this movement of protest. After a few exchanges and distribution of leaflets, the mobilized lawyers left the square.
